REFUGE VOW

Preregistration is strongly recommended for this program and required for anyone planning to take the Refuge vow.
In accordance with traditional practice and custom, anyone wishing to become a Buddhist may take refuge with any genuine Buddhist lineage. One becomes a Buddhist by taking refuge in the Three Jewels: in the Buddha as an example, in the Dharma—the teachings of the Buddha—as one’s path, and in the Sangha as the community of fellow practitioners. One need not be a member or participant in the Shambhala community to receive the Refuge Vow through the Shambhala lineage. If you have not been previously engaged with the Shambhala community, but are considering taking the Refuge Vow during this program, please contact [email protected], and someone will be in touch to discuss your situation. Please also see the prerequisites given below.
A heart gift (an additional financial offering) to the preceptor, Acharya Spiegel, is customary but not required.

Pre-Requisites for Taking the Refuge Vow:

1. A letter of recommendation from your Meditation Instructor. If you do not already have a meditation instructor please write to [email protected] and our Meditation Instructor Coordinator will contact you.
2. Personal study of "The Refuge Vow" sourcebook. This text will be distributed during the Refuge Vow Preparatory Class.
3. The two-session Refuge Vow Preparatory Class, Monday Sept 11 & Monday Sept 18, 7-9 PM, is also strongly recommended. Please register for the Refuge Vow Preparatory Class separately.

BODHISATTVA VOW

Preregistration is strongly recommended for this program and required for anyone planning to take the Bodhisattva vow.
In the tradition of Shambhala Buddhism, in addition to the vows unique to the Shambhala lineage, such as the Enlightened Society Vow, we also offer the traditional Buddhist Bodhisattva Vow of the Mahāyāna tradition. When we decide we are ready to enter the path of the warrior bodhisattva, a being who aspires to attain complete perfect buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings, we mark that transition by requesting and receiving the Bodhisattva Vow. The Bodhisattva Vow is based on the discovery and “activation” of bodhicitta, the heart-mind of awakening that aspires to, and actively engages in, working directly with others through the six perfections or pāramitās.
A heart gift (an additional financial offering) to the preceptor, Acharya Spiegel, is customary but not required.

Pre-Requisites for Taking the Bodhisattva Vow:

1. Have already taken the Refuge Vow, at least six months prior to taking the Bodhisattva Vow.
2. A letter of recommendation from your Meditation Instructor. If you do not already have a meditation instructor please write to [email protected] and our Meditation Instructor Coordinator will contact you.
3. Personal study of "The Bodhisattva Vow" sourcebook. This text will be distributed during the Walking the Bodhisattva Path class and at the Bodhisattva Vow Pre-meeting.

In addition, we strongly recommend:
4. Walking the Bodhisattva Path -- A four week survey of the Bodhisattva Vow & path: Mondays, Sept 11 – Oct 9, 7-9 PM. Please see separate listing for this survey course on the PVSC website.
5. Bodhisattva Vow Pre-meeting to address questions & discuss practicalities: Monday Oct 9, 7:00-9:00 PM.
