The heart proclamation of Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, about his direct experience of emptiness (śūnyatā), The Sūtra of the Heart of Transcendent Knowledge (prajñāpāramitāhṛdāya-sūtra), or more commonly, The Heart Sūtra, is recited daily throughout the Mahāyāna Buddhist world. One of the most accessible sūtras of the Perfection of Wisdom (prajñāpāramitā) literature, it is famous both for its brevity and its profundity. So shocking is Avalokiteśvara’s proclamation of emptiness as the final nature of all phenomena that it is said over 500 Arhats (realized disciples of the Buddha) had heart attacks upon hearing it.

In this day and half retreat we will engage in various exercises to facilitate entering into the sūtra’s teaching on emptiness. These will include brief sessions of analytical meditation as well as meditations on loving-kindness and compassion. In addition we will study the path structure encoded in the Heart Sūtra. The day will include sitting meditation, talks, contemplations, and discussion. Please join us for this day of practice and study of this extraordinary sūtra.

No prerequisites but regular meditation practice desirable.

There will be a one and a half hour break for lunch. Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for sitting meditation practice. Please refrain from using scented products.
